Futsal is now in a neighborhood near you.
The City of Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department is helping to expand both indoor and outdoor access to futsal, a game that is similar to soccer but generally played on a hard-surface court with a heavier ball.
Futsal goals were recently added to multi-sport courts at Walnut Street Park, Bagley Park, and McKinney Park. This means folks can play basketball, futsal, or other games on a first come, first served basis. In addition to the new goals, futsal courts are also available at Hidden Creek Community Center and Griffin Oaks Park. These have been popular places to play the game that was originally developed in South America.
Futsal is a fun, fast-paced game that is growing in popularity in Oregon, and Hillsboro Parks & Recreation wanted to make it more accessible for community members.
“We are responding to a need in the community,” said Kevin Zuercher, Recreation Supervisor with Hillsboro Parks & Recreation. “Adding futsal goals to the sport courts will allow year-round outdoor play for kids, families, and adults.”
In addition to creating opportunities for drop-in games at neighborhood parks, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation is helping expand access to futsal played indoors through a partnership with Hillsboro Futsal. The Latino-owned business hosts leagues and classes in a converted warehouse on SW Walnut Street behind M&M Marketplace.
Hillsboro Futsal received a $60,000 grant from Hillsboro Parks & Recreation in 2022 to replace the turf on one of three indoor fields at the facility which serves about 500 youth a year through programs and activities.
Every Saturday through March, Hillsboro Parks & Recreation is hosting free Open Play at Hillsboro Futsal. From 10 am to 12 pm, families can drop in to play basketball, ping pong, futsal, and make arts and crafts. No registration is required.
More partnership opportunities with Hillsboro Futsal are in the works.
If you haven’t played futsal yet, you now have more reasons to try it! More goals could be added to parks around Hillsboro in the coming year depending on use.
We hope to see you at a neighborhood game.
