Some good words from our friends over at County!
We frequently get questions about how old kids must be in order to stay home alone, especially during spring and summer breaks.
It's a tough question to answer because kids mature at different rates and situations vary. Age 10 is usually the benchmark, however it really does depend on the child and circumstances.
There are, however, a few basic basics you want to consider if your kids are staying home:
Does my child know how to get help in case of an emergency, like calling 9-1-1 or going to a neighbor's house?
Does my child have access to a phone and a list of important numbers to call in case of an emergency?
Have rules been established? Some rules might include not having friends over, not answering the phone, not opening the door to visitors and keeping all doors locked, no cooking (or establishing what appliances can be used) and checking in with a parent or caretaker at pre-determined times.
We strongly encourage you to talk with kids who may be staying home alone about emergencies and calling 911, and make sure to have an emergency contact with a trusted person whom your child can reach out to.
