Maybe it's the slightly more spring-like weather... or something in the water... or Monday malaise, approaching Ides of March, possibly the moon? We're not really sure what's up, but a whole lotta folks around town forgot to lock their vehicles last night.
As a result, nearly $4,000 worth of stuff - designer bags, laptops, tools, sound equipment, you name it, in addition to cash and mail - was stolen out of numerous unlocked vehicles last night in multiple neighborhoods.
To be clear, none of these were smashed out windows or break ins. All of the vehicles in question were unlocked.
During our investigations, we were able to get video from a few of these clouts and the thieves could literally be seen trying door handles and entering vehicles with ease.
We strongly encourage you to always lock your vehicle when unoccupied, especially when parked overnight. We also suggest you park off street whenever possible (which, we understand is not always feasible), and try to park in well lit areas. If you have cameras, orient them toward your driveway. Do not keep anything of value in your vehicle or, if you must, leave it in a locked trunk and out of sight.
Please report any suspicious activity to dispatch at 503-629-0111; if you see a theft in progress, call 911.
If you happen to have captured any suspicious activity on your camera last night, or have any information regarding these recent thefts, please contact the station at 503-992-3260.
Be good neighbors and look out for one another, lock your house and car, and call if you need us.
