November Gold by local artist Chuck St. John has been selected as the 2023 Picture Hillsboro Award. The warm and inviting pastel painting depicting peak fall foliage at Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve was selected from over 30 submissions.

Through Picture Hillsboro, 11 original art works by local artists have been added to Hillsboro’s Public Art Collection since the program started in 2012.

November Gold will become part of the collection and displayed in City of Hillsboro buildings for years to come. The piece is currently on display at the Hillsboro Civic Center through February 24, along with 13 works from eight other finalists.

Drawn to the drama, dynamic light, and variety of flora, fauna, and natural forms found throughout the Pacific Northwest, Chuck St. John works to capture the surroundings through pastel paintings.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, St. John now resides in Beaverton, OR. Having grown up observing his mother work with pastels in both portraiture and landscape, he has carried the familial artistic practice forward and spent the past 30 years developing his own hand in pastels.

St. John has learned from various mentors and material specialists along the way and has developed a unique approach to capturing evocative compositions while focusing on the subtleties of how light plays across the land. His works have been featured in juried exhibitions throughout Oregon.

November Gold features a winding pathway leading through a stand of trees in golden splendor at Hillsboro’s Jackson Bottom Wetlands Preserve. This work exemplifies St. John’s pursuit of translating the complexities of our experiences while enjoying the great outdoors.

Archival reproductions of Picture Hillsboro artworks are presented as gifts to visiting dignitaries and shared by City officials when they travel around the world.

The City emphasizes the pride it places in its creative community by designating artwork as an official gift.

The Hillsboro Public Art Program is part of the Hillsboro Parks & Recreation Department. Learn more about Hillsboro’s Public Art on the program webpage.
