We often do not think about what is washed down our kitchen sink drain after we prepare a meal.
Did you know your sink and garbage disposal drains to a four-inch diameter pipe under your property, which then connects to the City of Hillsboro’s public sanitary sewer system?
One of the biggest causes of clogs in household drain and the sanitary sewer pipes is fatty material. Listed below are common sources of FOG that usually get washed down the drain or garbage disposal:
- Grease food scraps
- Pan drippings
- Cooking oil and shortening
- Fats from meats
- Dairy products
- Oily sauces
- Salad dressing
Properly dispose of fats, oils, and grease in four simple steps:
- PLACE screens in all your sink drains.
- SCRAPE food scraps into a compost container or trash before rinsing in the sink, and do not rely on the garbage disposal.
- DISPOSE of cooking grease into a can, freeze it, then throw it away.
- WIPE all pans with a dry paper towel before washing them.
