Snow and ice make travel more difficult and increases the risk of vehicle crashes. Whenever possible, it’s best to stay home during winter weather events. If you must be out and about, take precautions to arrive safely at your destination. Here are four tips for staying safe during winter weather:
- Plan ahead and purchase supplies before the storms begin so you don’t need to be out in the snow and ice.
- Drive slower and increase the distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Stopping distance may double when driving on packed snow – and greatly increases on icy roads. Make sure to give yourself plenty of room to safely stop your vehicle.
- Keep non-clumping kitty litter, or a bag of sand, and a shovel in your vehicle in case you get stuck on ice or packed snow. Vehicle floor mats can be used for traction in a pinch.
- Be prepared for emergencies by keeping these items in your vehicle:
- Tire chains
- Gloves
- Flashlights
- Blankets
- Water
- Food
