City of North Plains issued the following announcement on May 5.
The annual North Plains volunteer recognition night took place at the Jessie Mays Community Center on April 21, 2022, and in addition to honoring and thanking all North Plains volunteers, four individuals were presented with special awards.
2021 Volunteer of the Year: Norma Tucker
Nominated by the Friends of the North Plains Public Library and the North Plains Public Library, the nomination application cited, “Norma’s gift of countless hours in the form of providing craft items and bake sale goods for fundraisers, hosting receptions for authors and artists, assembling Summer Reading and Welcome Wagon packets, helping staff with day to day operations, serving on the Friends Online Sales Team and as their Treasurer is priceless!” Norma has lived in the area her entire life, and has also done a variety of other volunteer work including for the North Plains Police Department, her church, and making quilts for the OHSU Oregon Donor program and cancer clinic and chemo patients.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Diane VanGrunsven
Diane was nominated by the North Plains Library for being a longtime leader and solid supporter of the North Plains Community through exceptional volunteer service and for her development of outstanding programs for the community. Over the years she has volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, the Girl Scouts of America, North Plains Elementary School, St. Edward Catholic Church, Friends of the North Plains Library, and the North Plains Library. “Diane’s been a dedicated volunteer at the North Plains Library since 2002! She is well-read and knowledgeable and has always assisted patrons at the Circulation Desk with a friendly smile. For many years, she diligently helped with the check-in of the WCCLS courier deliveries from other member libraries, and she has made significant contributions to the library and the community by bringing in top-notch programs for our community.”
2021 Teen Volunteers of the Year: Tyler Graham and Rebecca Sohler
Tyler Graham: The North Plains Library nominated Tyler for his volunteer work with the library since 2018. Tyler faithfully works a regular Saturday shift at the library and even with a busy school schedule, he provided 138 hours of service in 2021. Library Staff compliments Tyler as being fun to work with, a hard worker, innovative, willing to do any of the tasks that they set before him - and all with a great attitude. “Every week, Tyler continues to help keep our Library Collection in order by shelving, shelf reading, checking-in materials, and BookDrop duties,” says the nomination. “Tyler has made a difference at the library and in the North Plains Community.”
Rebecca Sohler: Also nominated by the North Plains Library, Rebecca, a Senior at Liberty High School, has volunteered with the North Plains Public Library Teen Council since 2016 and has been the Teen Council Co-President since 2019. She and her younger sister, Beth, help to set up various events to bring North Plains teens together. She has also volunteered with the 4-H Club Clever Clovers since 2012. “Rebecca began at the library as a Jr Volunteer and through the years of service, she has really distinguished herself as a dedicated, responsible, conscientious worker who makes a wonderful difference at the library and in the North Plains Community,” says the nomination.
