OR U.S. House District 1 issued the following announcement on Apr. 7.
Today House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01), a leader on the House Science Committee, to help negotiate the final text of legislation to expand U.S. economic competitiveness by strengthening the nation’s scientific enterprise and supply chains.
Bonamici will be a member of the conference committee tasked with reconciling the differences between the House and Senate versions of the America COMPETES Act before it is sent to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
“It is an honor to be entrusted with shaping the final version of the America COMPETES Act, which will benefit the economy for Oregonians and people across the country for decades to come,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “This timely legislation will bolster semiconductor production, which already employs thousands of people in NW Oregon, and strengthen domestic manufacturing so we can overcome recent supply chain challenges and better prepare for the future. In the conference committee, I will continue my work on this legislation with the goal of growing the economy, bolstering U.S manufacturing, addressing the climate crisis, improving educational opportunities, lowering costs, and more.”
The House-passed version of the America COMPETES Act includes $52 billion to accelerate semiconductor manufacturing and design and make major investments in U.S. innovation and manufacturing. It also contains several pieces of Bonamici’s legislation, including provisions to address the effects of the climate crisis on the ocean, improve workforce development, and enhance STEAM education.
