OR U.S. House District 1 issued the following announcement on Mar. 1.
Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) announced that Doug Moore, Executive Director of the Oregon League of Conservation Voters (OLCV), will be her virtual guest for President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address.
Moore has served as OLCV’s Executive Director since 2011. Bonamici serves on the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, the only member from the Pacific NW, and regularly works with OLCV to emphasize the urgent need to address climate change and protect Oregon’s irreplaceable outdoors and wildlife.
“In the year since President Biden took office, we have been able to restore numerous protections for our environment and put our country back on track to address the climate crisis,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “These steps are making a meaningful difference, and I am committed to building on them to support our transition to a clean energy economy, address decades of environmental racism, create clean-energy jobs, and more. I’m grateful for the important work OLCV and Doug are doing in Oregon to advocate for bold action to address the climate crisis, and I look forward to continuing to partner in this important effort.”
"On behalf of everyone at OLCV, I am truly honored and thrilled to be Congresswoman Bonamici's virtual guest tonight for President Biden's first State of the Union Address," said OLCV Executive Director Doug Moore. "With all the crises we currently face – and especially the climate crisis – Congresswoman Bonamici has been hard at work on solutions. She's a climate champion who continues to deliver for the people of Oregon on better protections for our treasured coast, our air and water, our forests and wildlife, and our climate."
"Congresswoman Bonamici's leadership is driven by a deep understanding that the impacts of climate change, from extreme heat and massive wildfires to ice storms, will only get much worse if we don't take action now," continued Moore. "And just recently, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the unfolding humanitarian crisis it is causing there, illustrates yet another reason – our national security – why we must transition quickly off of fossil fuels to a clean energy economy. Our immediate future and the future for the generations after us all demand we urgently act on climate. I look forward to joining Congresswoman Bonamici tonight to hear from President Biden on the path forward to deliver on federal climate action with the investments we need in clean energy, justice, and jobs."
Bonamici played a key role in crafting the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis’ comprehensive Climate Action Plan. More than 200 recommendations from the plan have already been signed into law. The recent bipartisan infrastructure law compliments the plan and is already starting to increase access to public transportation, reduce carbon emissions, and help strengthen our nation’s infrastructure to better withstand extreme weather events.
The House also recently passed the COMPETES Act, which included provisions Bonamici led to safeguard the health of the ocean by strengthening coastal acidification research and monitoring, expanding efforts to map and conserve blue carbon ecosystems, and enhancing ocean data collection. It also contains a provision similar to her Regional Clean Energy Innovation Act, which will help cutting-edge technologies achieve commercialization by leveraging regional clean energy capabilities and markets.
