West Linn High School’s boys golf team won the Canby Invitational at Willamette Valley Country Club on March 18, defeating reigning state champion Lake Oswego by five strokes in a field of 20 teams. The Lions finished with a score of 21-over-par 309, while Lake Oswego posted a 314.
The victory marks a strong start for West Linn after missing the Class 6A tournament last season. The team had spent the offseason reflecting on their previous disappointment and preparing for this year’s competitions.
Coach Adam Edwards said, “I feel like we’re still growing as a team, but a win’s a win, and we’re excited to start the season that way.” Senior Cade McVicker led West Linn with a medalist round of two-under-par 70, which included an eagle on the second hole. He edged out Clackamas senior David Lim (71) and Lake Oswego senior Drew Woolworth (73), among others. The tournament featured several top players from last year’s state championships.
Edwards noted that while his team performed well enough to win, there were missed opportunities: “We had some ups and downs,” he said. “They should be down lower, and they all know that. Putting was our nemesis. We couldn’t put the ball in the hole on the green. That’s what killed us.”
The Lions’ lineup included seniors Luke Sidhu (79), Grady Kane (80), Cade Lee (80), and Coby MacGlashan (80). Edwards described beating Lake Oswego early in the season as “fantastic” and expects tough competition throughout the year: “We’re going to be battling them all season,” he said.
McVicker’s performance was seen as a confidence boost after finishing fourth at state last year. Edwards praised him: “To come in and beat No. 1 is a great way to start it off,” he said. McVicker has committed to Seattle University and was named OGA Junior Player of the Year for 2025.
Elsewhere in Oregon high school golf, Metro League tournaments began this week with Westview junior Melinee Udom winning girls play at Rock Creek Country Club with a three-under-par 69, while Westview senior Alex Yang took first place among boys with a score of 69.
At Bandon Dunes’ Old Mac course during the Marshfield Invitational, Eagle Point junior Jordan Giles tied Douglas sophomore Wyatt Winters for medalist honors with even-par rounds of 71.
