Today Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-1) and Oregon Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced a $2 million U.S. Department of Transportation grant award to the City of Beaverton for the Beaverton Downtown Loop project.
The Beaverton Downtown Loop is a mobility and modernization project that will significantly improve bike and pedestrian safety along a dangerous downtown corridor. This project will also strengthen local economic development and reconnect lower-income residents to community assets and civic services. The grant will support the design and construction of a demonstration project in the downtown area.
“On a recent tour of the Beaverton Downtown Loop, I saw firsthand the challenges that people experience when walking, biking, or using transit in Beaverton’s downtown area,” said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. “I’m glad to help secure federal funding to support this project, which will increase access, mobility, and safety for the Beaverton community and build a more equitable, sustainable transportation corridor.”
“This federal investment in downtown Beaverton will help ensure a better quality of life for families and small businesses living and working in this growing Washington County city,” Senator Ron Wyden said. “I’m glad the teamwork between Beaverton and the congressional delegation has secured these federal resources to support safer and broader transportation options that are both sustainable and equitable.”
“This grant will help make Beaverton thrive,” said Senator Jeff Merkley. “This federal funding will make Beaverton’s vibrant Downtown Loop safer for pedestrians with wider sidewalks, safer for bicyclists with protected bike lanes, and more easily accessible by public transportation with more bus stops. This critical support will go a long way to continue to propel Beaverton forward.”
“I am thrilled that Beaverton is receiving this planning grant for our Downtown Loop Project,” said Mayor Lacey Beaty. “The Loop is our Complete Streets approach to reimagining this critical connection for people in our community. I’m grateful for the support of Congresswoman Bonamici, Senator Wyden, and Senator Merkley. This transformative project prioritizes safety and equity, and truly takes every level of government working together to make it happen.”
The Beaverton Downtown Loop is one of Congresswoman Bonamici’s 15 priority Community Funding Projects that she submitted for the 2023 fiscal year. It was included in an appropriations bill that recently passed the House and now awaits consideration in the Senate.
