Tigard Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Apr. 18.

Margaret Doherty has been named as the 2022 recipient of the Tigard’s First Citizen award. This award recognizes someone who has made in-depth, long-term volunteer contributions to the Tigard community over the years. The winner is active, involved, interested and enthusiastic about making Tigard a nice place to live and work. This individual excels in any area of unpaid endeavor of education, social services, youth work, and community improvement of public services. This award is given in the spirit of all volunteers who remain unknown. The recipient joins the ranks of those previously honored in continually striving to improve the Tigard Area.

Margaret Doherty has been making impacts in the Tigard community for more than 20 years! Many know her as former Oregon State Representative of House District 35. Outside of all the impacts she made legislatively in our community, she has been a huge community champion as a volunteer.

As a former teacher, Margaret is very passionate for public education and the importance of good education. She has brought that passion into her volunteerism. Margaret has been a board member for the Tigard High School Tigard Turns the Tide for two years. This program promotes a safe and healthy community in Tigard by reducing alcohol, tobacco, and other drug related problems through prevention, education treatment advocacy, and support of state and nationwide prevention efforts. This past year Margaret also assisted the Tigard Tualatin School District with their strategic planning and has been a mentor to Tigard High School students through the career center. You may have also seen her assisting at the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin School District Annual Art in the Burbs event.

Margaret has also been a long-time volunteer for the City of Tigard. She was on the Tigard Planning Commission for 8 years. This group plays an integral role in the growth issues of the city. They are responsible for assisting the City Council to develop, maintain, update, and implement the city Comprehensive Plan, formulate the city Capital Implementation Program, and to review and act on development projects and development code provisions delegated to the commission. She has also been volunteering at the Tigard Public Library for over 20 years!

Over the last 6 years, Margaret has been a volunteer and board member for Just Compassion. They are a coalition that is stiving to create a safe and hospitable environment and a community centered response to the needs of those without homes and those living in poverty in East Washington County. She has also been on the Tigard Arts Council for two years and the Tigard Historical Association board member for a year.

As you can see, Margaret is a standout in the Tigard community. Please join us in congratulating Margaret on her award and thanking her for the service to our Tigard community.  Her award will be formally presented with other Tigard volunteer and business awards at Tigard’s 2022 Shining Stars Community Awards Gala Presented by Edge One Media, held on Friday, April 29 from 5:30 – 9 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Washington Square.
