Tigard Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Apr. 15.
Bill Gerkin has been selected as the 2022 Tigard Shining Stars “From the Heart” Volunteer of the Year, named in honor of Jim Hartman. Jim Hartman set the standard for this award by his example of giving from the heart to his community, and the “From the Heart” award honors a person who has dedicated their time and energy to a specific cause in the Tigard community. This person gives willingly, energetically, and consistently; they might be well known or might be a “quiet” volunteer, unrecognized until now, but always gives “from the heart”! This person may have worked on the same project for many years.
Bill has been a resident of Tigard- King City since January of 1976. He is a retired business Owner that provided vending and coffee service to businesses.
Bill has been volunteering for the Tigard Senior Center, Meals on Wheels People for just over 30 years. He started in December 1991 after retiring. The Meals on Wheels People delivers meals to 180 to 190 people along 24 routes in Tigard, Tualatin, and Sherwood. Each week, Bill takes over an hour of his time to deliver food to 8 to 12 community members. Over the last 30 years, Bill has rarely missed a day. He has said “I really enjoy it. Sometimes I am the only person they see all day. In a recent Tigard Life article by Barbara Sherman, Bill said “The clients don’t want me to quit. These clients feel like extended family.”
He has also been the Liaison between the Tigard Senior Center Meals and the board and was later a member of the board when the organization was called “Loaves and Fishes.”
Outside of volunteering for Meals on Wheels People, Bill has also volunteered for Just Compassion, Bethlehem House of Bread, United Way, American Red Cross, and the Washington County Sheriff’s office. He has also been a member of the King City Lions Club since 1997.
