Clackamas High School announced on Mar. 9 that Ryan McCants has been hired as its new head football coach, following his six-year tenure at Roosevelt High School where he compiled a 33-23 record.
The appointment comes after the resignation of former coach James Holan, who left in December to pursue a new opportunity in California. Holan led Clackamas for six seasons with a 36-26 record.
McCants, a former Oregon State running back, guided Roosevelt to a 6-4 season last year and secured the Portland Interscholastic League title. His leadership at Roosevelt included two shared league titles and an outright championship in 2025—the school’s first in three decades. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Marylhurst University.
In a joint statement, Clackamas athletic director John Arntson and principal Alyssa Engle said, “We are thrilled to announce that Ryan McCants has been selected as the next head football coach at Clackamas High School. Coach McCants joins us from Roosevelt High School, where he established himself as a premier leader in Oregon high school football.” They added that McCants brings “a wealth of experience, a sophisticated tactical approach, and a deep commitment to the holistic development of student-athletes.”
Arntson and Engle also highlighted the qualities that set McCants apart during their search process: “Our search committee was particularly impressed by his track record of building competitive and disciplined programs that excel both on the field and in the classroom. His steadfast focus on integrity, accountability, and the values we cherish here at Clackamas High School makes him an ideal fit for our community.”
A meet-the-coach event will be scheduled soon for players and families to hear directly from McCants about his vision for the program.
