Amity High School’s girls basketball team secured its second consecutive state title by defeating Vale 47-44 in the OSAA/OnPoint Community Credit Union 3A State Championships at Marshfield High School on March 7.

The victory was significant for Amity, as it avenged an earlier season loss to Vale and capped off a strong run by a senior-heavy roster. The win also highlighted the team’s defensive strength and ability to perform under pressure.

Senior Lyli Rideout said, “It gave us extra momentum for this game. After that loss, we had to learn a lot about ourselves. It’s all right to lose the first one if you win the second, especially if it’s this one.” Coach Jed McMullen commented on the close finish: “We made that hard on ourselves,” he said, noting how Vale nearly tied the game in the final seconds. He added, “That’s a phenomenal team. Great kids, coached well. They work hard. They don’t quit. My hat’s off to them.” Haley Miersma sealed the win with two free throws after Vale’s Kesley Stepleton brought her team within two points.

Vale coach Randy Seals praised his team’s resilience: “That’s what they do. They never give up. They just kept battling, got a few shots to drop, got a few turnovers… I wanted it so bad for them. They’ve worked so hard. It just didn’t turn out.” Amity maintained its lead through strong defense and contributions from multiple players, including twins Adie and Eliza Nisly.

Rideout reflected on her team’s achievements: “It’s crazy — three championships in a row — and it’s all the same girls.” Alyssa McMullen added, “I’m so excited. I just love my team so much.” Miersma emphasized defense as key: “Defense wins championships,” she said.

In other tournament results, Banks defeated Creswell 55-23 for third place behind strong defensive play and early control of the game. Valley Catholic took fourth place with a 59-36 win over Sisters, using transition offense and tough defense to build an early lead.

Looking ahead, both Amity and Vale will see many seniors graduate after successful seasons marked by teamwork and determination.
